And she said, What wilt thou give me, that thou mayest come in unto me? ... 18 ... NOTES:
(1) Phares was a bastard, the son of Judah and Tamar, Judah's widowed daughter-in-law, born out of wedlock (GEN 38:15-29).
(2) Therefore, neither Phares, nor his descendants to the 10th generation were eligible to enter into the congregation of the Lord (DEU 23:2). David, the 9th generation from Phares, obviously did enter the congregation of the Lord. For some reason, God's prohibition in DEU 23:2 did not apply to him.
(3) Aaron, the high priest, married Elisheba, daughter of Amminadab (generation 3 after Phares) and sister of Naashon (generation 4) (EXO 6:23). Because of his priestly office, it's not plausible that Aaron would have married a woman from the line of a bastard. We must conclude that Elisheba (and probably her relatives) were considered members of the Lord's congregation. For some reason, God's prohibition in DEU 23:2 did not apply to them.
(4) Nahshon (generation 4) made numerous offerings to the Lord (NUM 7:12-17) and was a prince of Judah (1CHR 2:10). We must conclude that he, too, was a member of the Lord's congregation. For some reason, God's prohibition in DEU 23:2 did not apply to him.
(5) God himself chose the son of Jesse (generation 8) to be king, namely, David (generation 9). We must conclude that Jesse and David were also members of the Lord's congregation. For some reason, God's prohibition in DEU 23:2 did not apply to them.
